⁍ Germany’s Christian Democrats were set for an election win in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia on Sunday.


⁍ State Premier Armin Laschet took confidence from the victory as he seeks to succeed Chancellor Angela Merkel.


⁍ Laschet was aiming to increase the Christian Democrats’ lead over rivals in the local elections.


– Germany’s most populous state, North Rhine-Westphalia, went to the polls Sunday for local elections, and the Christian Democrats, Angela Merkel’s ruling party, cruised to victory, reports Reuters. The CDU won 36.0% of the vote, down 1.5% from the last such election in 2014. The Social Democrats, Merkel’s party’s junior coalition partners, came in second with 23.5%, down 7.9 points, and the Greens third with 19.0%, up 7.3 points.
