⁍ Ginsburg was a champion of women’s rights who became an icon for American liberals.

⁍ Her death could dramatically alter the ideological balance of the court, which already had a 5-4 conservative majority.

⁍ President Donald Trump already has appointed two conservatives to lifetime posts on the court, Neil Gorsuch in 2017 and Brett Kavanaugh in 2018.

– Ruth Bader Ginsburg has died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 87, the Supreme Court announced Friday. The court said in a statement that she died at her home in Washington, DC, “of complications from metastatic pancreatic cancer.” Ginsburg, the second-longest serving justice, was appointed to the court by Bill Clinton in 1993 and has served there since. President Trump can appoint a third justice to the court if he is elected to a third term in November, Reuters reports. He has already appointed Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says Trump’s nominee “will receive a vote on the floor of the United States Senate.” Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer says the vacancy “should not be filled until we have a new president.”
