– President Trump’s choice to succeed the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the Supreme Court will have her first face-to-face meeting with senators on Tuesday, Reuters reports. Amy Coney Barrett will meet with Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham at the US Capitol at 5:30pm. She will meet with several other committee Republicans earlier in the day. The 48-year-old Barrett, who would be the fifth woman to serve on the high court, is Trump’s pick to succeed the late Ginsburg, who died Sept. 18 at the age of 87. Trump’s move to fill the vacancy so close to an election is the first time a US president has moved to fill a Supreme Court vacancy so close. Democrats are opposed to the move, saying the winner of the presidential election should pick the Supreme Court justice. If confirmed, Barrett could be on the bench when the justices hear arguments in a case that Trump and fellow Republicans are asking to strike down the ObamaCare health law known formally as the Affordable Care Act on Nov. 10. Some Democrats have said they will refuse to meet with Barrett, but others, including some on the committee, have said they intend to engage in the process so they can ask Barrett directly about issues such as healthcare and abortion. Senator Chris Coons, a Democrat, will talk to her by phone or in a Zoom meeting, a spokesman said.
