⁍ In December 2012, the gang rape of a 23-year-old woman sparked nationwide outrage and led to a tough new anti-rape law.

– Police in India have arrested four suspects in the gang-rape and death of a 19-year-old woman, the BBC reports. The woman’s family says she was beaten, gang-raped, and left to die in a field, but a police official says she died of a neck injury. “No sperm was found in samples,” he says, per Reuters. The official adds that the woman’s “dying declaration said she was raped” and police cremated her body without her family’s consent. The four suspects, all of whom are high-caste Hindu men, have been arrested and are being held in a police station in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. The woman’s family says she was kidnapped, gang-raped, and left to die in a field by men who forced their way into the house after she refused to watch a TV news report about the attack, the Times of India reports.
