⁍ U.S. President Donald Trump, in quarantine on Friday after testing positive for the coronavirus, has underplayed the pandemic for months.

⁍ He has eschewed masks, criticized others who wear them and held large rallies with unmasked supporters against the advice of public health professionals.

⁍ While facing sharp criticism for his response to an outbreak that has killed more than 200,000 people in the United States alone, the president has touted his management of the crisis.

– The CDC says a patient in isolation at a West Virginia hospital has tested positive for the virus that has killed more than 200,000 people worldwide, the AP reports. The patient, a male who recently traveled to China, is in stable condition and has been isolated at a hospital in Charleston, W. Va. The virus is a respiratory illness related to the Ebola virus. The Virginian-Pilot reports that the patient is a male in his 50s who has been in contact with several people, including health care workers, since returning to the US. The Virginian-Pilot notes that it’s not clear how many people were in contact with the patient prior to his return to the US, but it’s not clear how many people may have been exposed to him. The patient is not showing symptoms, and the CDC says there is no risk to the public. President Trump, who is in quarantine at the White House, tweeted Friday that the disease is “totally under control,” Reuters reports. “I always treated the Chinese Virus very seriously, and have done a very good job from the beginning, including my very early decision to close the ‘borders’ from China – against the wishes of almost all,” he wrote. “The United States greatly appreciates their efforts and transparency. It will all work out well. In particular, on behalf of the American People, I want to thank President Xi!”
