– Kidnapped Mali politician Soumaila Cisse and French aid worker Sophie Petronin were freed on Thursday, Mali’s presidency said, after lengthy periods in the hands of Islamist insurgents. “I can confirm that the two hostages have been freed,” President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita said in a televised address, according to Reuters. “They are with the president of the republic at the moment of their release.” The pair were seized by al-Qaeda-linked militants on March 22 in the northern city of Timbuktu.
