– As Britain and the European Union neared a deal on Brexit, Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned that the UK would be “ajar” for talks on a post-Brexit trade deal if the EU “fundamentally changed course.” Johnson said that Britain should prepare for a “no-deal” exit unless the EU fundamentally changes its approach, reports Reuters. The Guardian notes that Britain is due to exit the EU on March 29, but talks on a post-Brexit trade deal are ongoing. The so-called “Internal Market Bill,” which would give the British government the right to override parts of the withdrawal agreement, was passed by Britain’s lower chamber of parliament last month and is due to be debated in the House of Lords on Monday. The bill seeks to protect free trade between Britain’s four nations once a Brexit transition period ends. Britain says the bill will not be needed if negotiations on future relations with the EU, notably trade, are successful. Meanwhile, Johnson said on Sunday the door remained “ajar” for talks to continue on a post-Brexit trade deal if the EU altered its approach. British senior minister Michael Gove will hold talks on the issues covered by the new law in a joint committee meeting on Monday with the EU’s Maros Sefcovic, Bloomberg reports. The bill was passed by the UK’s lower chamber of parliament last month and is due to be debated in the House of Lords on Monday. Legislators are unlikely to reject the draft law entirely this week, but are certain to take out the most controversial parts in the weeks ahead of a vote.
