– Intel has agreed to a $9 billion deal to sell its memory chip business to South Korea’s SK Hynix, in a move that will give SK Hynix—the second-largest maker of memory chips in the world—more than 30% of the global memory market, the Wall Street Journal reports. The deal, which still needs the approval of Intel shareholders, is expected to close by the end of the year. South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency called the deal a “game-changer” for the country’s semiconductor industry, and Westlaw Today notes that five law firms were involved in the deal: Cutler, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, and Shanghai-based Fangda Partners advised SK Hynix; Wilmer Hale and Dorr advised Intel; and South Korean firm Bae, Kim & Lee represented Intel.
