⁍ Police are investigating an attack that caused extensive damage to more than 60 works of art and artefacts displayed at three locations on Berlin’s Museum Island.
⁍ Unidentified suspects splashed an oily liquid around the museums during opening hours on Oct. 3, Carsten Pfohl of Berlin’s criminal police told a news conference.
⁍ The damaged exhibits include Egyptian sarcophagi, stone sculptures and 19th-century paintings held at the Pergamon Museum, the Neues Museum and the Alte Nationalgalerie.
– More than 60 works of art—including Egyptian sculptures, 19th-century paintings, and stone arcophagi—were splashed with an oily liquid around Berlin’s Museum Island during the opening hours of Oct. 3, causing “extensive damage” to more than 60 pieces, police say. The suspect or suspects, who were not seen on surveillance cameras, splashed the liquid around the Neues Museum, the Alte Nationalgalerie, and the Museum Island itself, Reuters reports. The museums’ top exhibits weren’t damaged and the liquid wasn’t corrosive, officials say. There is no indication that the attack was politically motivated, police say. “One does not recognize any propaganda,” a police spokesman says.
