⁍ Australia will slightly lift the cap on the number of citizens and permanent residents allowed to return each week.
⁍ PM Scott Morrison said the current cap will rise to 5,865 people in November, an increase of 290.
⁍ The increase comes amid heightened pressure on Morrison’s government to help some 26,000 Australians that registered their intention to come home.
– The number of people allowed to return home to Australia each week has been capped at 500 since July in an effort to stop the spread of a deadly virus. But that may be about to change. Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced Friday that the weekly cap will be lifted to 5,865 people in November, an increase of 290 from the current limit, reports Reuters. “The most effective way to get Australians home is to increase these caps,” he said. Some 26,000 people had registered to come home, but many couldn’t afford a plane ticket or pay for hotel quarantine, which can cost thousands of dollars. Earlier this month, the government agreed to allow up to 500 people per fortnight to return.
