⁍ Acting U.N. Libya envoy Stephanie Williams said the ceasefire would start immediately and all foreign fighters must quit Libya within three months.
⁍ Turkey, the main backer of the GNA, immediately voiced scepticism that the ceasefire would hold.
⁍ Libya has enjoyed no political stability since the 2011 NATO-backed uprising against Muammar Gaddafi, and has been split since 2014 between east and west.
– The UN-backed Libyan government and an eastern-based military group signed a ceasefire agreement Friday, marking the first time in more than a year that the country’s warring factions have agreed to a cessation of hostilities, the AP reports. The agreement was reached after the eastern Libyan National Army, led by Khalifa Haftar, lost control of Tripoli in June. Reuters reports that the ceasefire will start immediately and all foreign fighters—both sides have thousands of them—must leave the country within three months. The deal was reached after the GNA defeated the LNA in Tripoli. “We all want to end the war and destruction. But personally I don’t trust those in power,” says a businessman in Tripoli. “If there is no force or mechanism to apply this on the ground … this deal will only be ink on paper.”
