– Malaysia’s prime minister has asked the country’s king to declare a state of emergency to deal with the H1N1 virus and other threats, Reuters reports. Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin met with King Al-Sultan Abdullah on Friday to present the emergency proposals, which also include suspending parliament. The king will consult with other royals before making a final decision, according to a statement from the prime minister’s office. The king can declare an emergency if it’s related to security, economy, or public order. The move comes amid a power struggle between Muhyiddin and opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, who wants to form a new government and control the country, the New York Times reports. Muhyiddin’s government is scheduled to propose its 2021 budget on Nov. 6. Defeat on the budget would count as a vote of no confidence in Muhyiddin and could trigger an election. Emergency rule might mean the budget would not be put to a vote. Former premier and opposition lawmaker Mahathir Mohamad said there were no riots or a breakdown of law and order to justify an emergency, which would give additional powers to Muhyiddin. “Faced with the possibility of being overthrown, the prime minister wants the powers under a state of emergency,” Mahathir wrote in a blog post.
