⁍ Nigeria’s police chief ordered the immediate mobilisation of all force resources to try to control the worst street violence in two decades.

⁍ Unrest is the most serious political crisis confronting President Muhammadu Buhari, a former military ruler elected in 2015.

⁍ Several states, mostly in southern Nigeria, have imposed curfews after two weeks of confrontations between protesters and security services.

– Protests against the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari have been going on for weeks in Nigeria, but they took a turn for the worse this week with the deaths of at least three people and the amputation of a young man’s leg, the New York Times reports. The latest protests, which have spread to several states, were sparked by the killing of a young man by security forces during a protest in the northern city of Kaduna on Friday. The victim, identified as 24-year-old Samuel David Samuel, was shot in the leg while trying to stop thieves from stealing food from a grocery store, according to the Times. His death was followed by the amputation of his left leg below the knee by a gang of men armed with AK-47s, Reuters reports. The incident led to calls for the re-election of Buhari, who was defeated in last year’s presidential election by former military ruler Goodluck Jonathan.
