– The latest death toll from the coronavirus is 943 worldwide, with more than 1 million cases and more than 25,000 in India, CNN reports. The disease has also spread to the US, where at least 77,255 cases have been reported, topping a previous high set two days ago. “How can you not shake your head, right?” Dr. Ali Khan, dean of the College of Public Health at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, tells CNN. “We are the one outlier amongst all of our peer countries. All of Europe has contained their disease. And many parts of the world, not only have they contained, they’ve eliminated disease.” Khan says the US is much better equipped to deal with the disease than India, where the death toll is five times higher. The US spends nearly 17% of its GDP on health care, compared to the average of other countries. It has almost six times as many beds available per 1,000 people as India. Yet its death toll is five times as high. In India, marginalized communities are suffering the most from the epidemic and its devastating economic toll.
