– A New Zealand resort town has long been rumored to be the destination of choice for the world’s richest, and now real estate agents say they’re seeing a huge uptick in buyers from outside the country. The reason? They’re looking for doomsday bunkers. Queenstown has long been described as a place where “the world’s wealthy might prefer to ride out the end times,” per CNN, with Silicon Valley billionaire Peter Thiel and former NBC News anchor Matt Lauer among those who’ve purchased homes there. Gary Lynch, general manager of Rising S, a company that has sold some 1,400 bunkers in its 18-year history, tells CNN he expects to sell a dozen in New Zealand this year, up from the handful he’s sold there in the past. “There were a lot of people that were buying land and putting bunkers’ below ground,” he says. “They’re looking for something to protect their families, something that’s self sufficient, something that they can live in for a prolonged period of time.” Lynch, who won’t say where the bunkers are located, adds he’s had trouble getting them into New Zealand because of the “interest in shelters going to New Zealand,” but he says he’s “supposed to, yes.
