– Civil rights icon and Georgia Rep. John Lewis has been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. The 78-year-old civil rights leader, who was beaten during the “Bloody Sunday” march in Selma, Ala., in 1965 and went on to represent Georgia in Congress for 30 years, revealed in December that he was being treated for the aggressive form of cancer. His office said at the time that the disease had metastasized, meaning it had spread to other parts of his body. The Journal-Constitution reported in March that the cancer had metastasized, meaning it had spread to other parts of Lewis’ body. Lewis’ office has not yet released a cause of death.
