⁍ Lewis’ death leaves the Georgia Democratic Party with the task of naming a nominee to face off against Republican Angela Stanton-King.
⁍ Under Georgia law, the state executive committee of the Democratic Party can appoint a replacement nominee.
⁍ The party will have to inform the Georgia secretary of state’s office whether they intend to appoint a replacement by Monday.
⁍ If no one receives more than 50% of the vote, the top-two finishers would advance to a January runoff.

– Civil rights icon and Georgia Rep. John Lewis died Friday at the age of 80 after a six-month battle with cancer, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. “Our nation will never be the same without him,” Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said in a statement. “There are no words to adequately express the sadness that countless Americans are feeling upon learning this news.” Kemp, a Republican, is expected to call a special election for Nov. 3 to fill Lewis’ seat. The seat is currently held by a Democrat, and Hillary Clinton carried the overwhelmingly Democratic 5th District by more than 70 points in 2016.
