– The 37-year-old man accused of killing a Washington state police officer earlier this week told investigators that he shot at two officers because he feared they’d kill him, police say. Henry Eugene Washington has been charged with aggravated murder, attempted murder, and vehicular assault in the death of officer Jonathan Shoop, who was shot in the head after he and fellow officer Mustafa Kumcur approached Washington’s car during a traffic stop, the Seattle Times reports. Washington—who crashed his car after hitting a man riding a scooter in a crosswalk—is believed to have fired at Shoop and Kumcur twice before both officers returned fire, police say. Shoop was killed by a bullet fired from Kumcur’s gun, which ricocheted and struck him in the head, authorities say. Washington, who called 911 to tell his family he’d shot a police officer, was taken into custody after he was found on the roof of a nearby business, wedged between buildings, police say. He has prior convictions for assault, theft, evading arrest, and making terroristic threats, CNN reports.
