⁍ The Zebra is a buzzy car insurance startup based in Austin, Texas.

– “When we moved here, Austin was really still at the early stages of kind of being this buzzy, trendy, startup destination place,” says Josh Dziabiak, co-founder and COO of The Zebra, a car insurance startup that just moved to a massive new office in East Austin. The Zebra was originally founded in Pittsburgh, but decided to move to Austin because of the city’s tech culture, the pool of talent, and the fact that real estate is cheaper and more plentiful there, Dziabiak tells Business Insider. In fact, the company decided to change its name from Insurance Zebra to The Zebra because “being associated with a ‘stodgy’ industry was turning off would-be employees,” Dziabiak says. Now, the growing team hails from all over the country, in what Dziabiak credits to a more generally pleasant lifestyle. “Anecdotally, it feels like we moved a lot of people here from California,” he says. “A lot of it has to do with the cost of living.” The new office is stocked with perks similar to those found in Silicon Valley, including an in-house barista, kombucha on tap, a ping- pong table, and a bike room for employees to cycle to work.
