⁍ A growing number of wealthy conservative Americans say Trump is a threat to democracy and the long-term health of the Republican Party.

⁍ They are actively supporting his Democratic opponent in the Nov. 3 vote, former Vice President Joe Biden.

⁍ Their money has fueled an unprecedented campaign from members of a sitting president’s own party to oust him from office.

– President Trump’s re-election isn’t just on the minds of wealthy Republican donors—it’s on the minds of many of the party’s own members, too, Reuters reports. “The distinction in 2020 that we didn’t see in 2016 is the amount of money backing their efforts and their size,” says Democratic strategist Karen Finney. “The number of people willing to go public about Trump and put serious money behind beating him—I don’t think we’ve seen an effort on this scale.” The Lincoln Project, the most prominent Republican-backed group opposing Trump’s re-election, has raised $20 million since December, including $1 million in June from billionaire Andy Redleaf, one of the group’s founders. Other Republican-backed groups, including 43 Alumni for Biden, a super PAC supporting Joe Biden’s bid for the White House, have also formed in recent months. But Trump’s campaign raised $55.2 million in June, compared to the $20 million the Lincoln Project has raised since December. Trump’s campaign is outspending the Lincoln Project by a ratio of more than 2-to-1. Still, some analysts believe a close election could make a difference. “I made the decision I will not support a Republican candidate in an election until Trump is gone,” says Tennessee hog farmer Jimmy Tosh, a lifelong Republican who has given $11,000 to the Lincoln Project. “I agree with 80% of the things he does; I just cannot stand a liar.”
