⁍ Oregon’s governor on Wednesday said federal tactical police had agreed to withdraw from Portland.
⁍ U.S. officials said agents would stay until conditions improved after weeks of clashes with protesters.
⁍ ‘They have acted as an occupying force & brought violence,’ Governor Kate Brown wrote on Twitter.
⁍ Separately, the government announced a deployment of federal agents to Cleveland, Milwaukee and Detroit to curtail a surge of violent crime.
– The White House is sending federal agents to Detroit, Milwaukee, and Cleveland in an effort to reduce violent crime, the AP reports. Officials say 42 federal agents will be sent to Detroit, 25 to Milwaukee, and 25 to Cleveland as part of Operation Legend. Officials say the goal is to reduce violent crime, including murders, which have soared in the city since President Trump took office. In Portland, Ore., meanwhile, officials say federal tactical police will be withdrawn from the city after weeks of clashes with protesters, Reuters reports. Oregon Gov. Kate Brown says Vice President Mike Pence has agreed to a “phased” end to the deployment that has drawn criticism from Democrats and civil liberties groups. “They have acted as an occupying force & brought violence,” Brown tweeted Wednesday. Officials say Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents protecting a federal courthouse will remain in Portland on standby to defend the courthouse if Oregon State Police are overwhelmed. The deployment of federal agents in cities including Chicago, Kansas City, Mo., and Albuquerque, NM, earlier this month drew criticism from Democrats and civil liberties groups who alleged excessive force and federal overreach by Trump. “The more the feds are out there, the more attention that’s going to grab, and obviously Trump didn’t think this through when he did this,” says a 22-year-old Black protest leader in Portland.
