– The number of cases of coronavirus, a respiratory illness related to the common cold, has soared in Spain, with 1,229 new infections in the past 24 hours and 13,391 over the past week, according to the country’s health ministry. That’s the highest total since the country ended a lockdown that had been in place since early April, Reuters reports. Spain’s top coronavirus expert, however, says the country isn’t in the grip of a second wave of infections: “A second wave would be when we have uncontrolled, widespread community transmission.”
