– The death toll in Tuesday’s devastating blast in a warehouse district of Beirut has hit 100, per the AP, and that number is expected to rise as rescuers continue to comb through the debris. The United Nations says it is sending a team to Lebanon to help with the search and rescue, as well as provide humanitarian assistance. Lebanon’s prime minister says the country has asked for help from the international community. The AP has a list of some of the other international assistance being offered: France has sent two planes with medical supplies, along with 55 security personnel, around 10 emergency doctors, and 600 chemical protective suits, Reuters reports. Germany will send a 47-strong rescue team, as well as $1 million in immediate aid via the German Red Cross to establish first aid stations in Beirut. Iran has sent nine tons of food, medical equipment, medical personnel, and a field hospital to Lebanon, according to Iranian media. Russia has dispatched five planes with medical equipment, a field hospital, and medical personnel. Turkey’s Humanitarian Relief Foundation says it is helping in the search for survivors, digging through debris, and recovering bodies. The World Health Organization and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies are sending 40 tons of medical supplies, including personal protective equipment, on a flight paid for by Dubai-based International Humanitarian City, a hub for humanitarian emergency preparedness and response. The EU has activated its Copernicus satellite mapping system to help assess the damage.
