⁍ The United States government will pay Johnson & Johnson over $1 billion for 100 million doses of its potential coronavirus vaccine.
⁍ The latest contract is priced at roughly $10 per vaccine dose produced by J&J.
⁍ That compares with the $19.50 per dose that the U.S. is paying for the vaccine being developed by Pfizer Inc.
– Johnson & Johnson has landed a $1 billion deal to supply the US with 100 million doses of its potential coronavirus vaccine, which is currently being tested on healthy volunteers in the US and Belgium in an early-stage study. Under the contract announced Wednesday, J&J will deliver the vaccine to the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) on a not-for-profit basis after approval or emergency use authorization by the FDA, reports Reuters. The deal, J&J’s first to supply its vaccine to a country, is part of the US government’s Operation Warp Speed program to stock up on drugs and vaccines in the event of a coronavirus pandemic, the Guardian reports. Pfizer and German biotech BioNTech are working on a vaccine for the virus, which is believed to cause respiratory illness in humans, but so far there are no approved vaccines for COVID-19. More than 20 are in clinical trials.
