– Opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanouskaya says she is the true winner of Sunday’s presidential election in Belarus, and she’s willing to talk to President Alexander Lukashenko. But Lukashenko, who has been in power for more than 25 years, says he won’t step down, the AP reports. “The response will be appropriate. We won’t allow the country to be torn apart,” he was quoted as saying by the Belta news agency. “They are trying to orchestrate mayhem. But I have already warned: there will be no revolution.” Police used tear gas and stun grenades Sunday to disperse thousands of protesters in Minsk who had gathered to denounce what they said was an electoral farce, Reuters reports. At least one person was killed and hundreds detained. Tikhanouskaya, a former English teacher, says Lukashenko rigged the election to stay in power. “The authorities need to think about peaceful ways to hand over power,” she said. “Of course we do not recognize the results.”
