⁍ Two of the five wealthiest U.S. college sports conferences postponed the fall football season on Tuesday because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
⁍ The Big Ten suspended fall sports, while the Pac-12 said it would not hold any sports competitions for the remainder of the year.
⁍ The move leaves the future of college football being played at all this fall in significant doubt.
– Football season has been canceled for the rest of the year in the Big Ten and the Pac-12 over concerns about the spread of a highly communicable disease, Reuters reports. According to the AP, the Big Ten and the Pac-12 announced Tuesday that fall sports will be canceled for the rest of the year because of the H1N1 strain of influenza known as COVID-19. The H1N1 strain has been linked to an unusually high number of suicides among college football players. “We know that this is a difficult day for our student-athletes, and our hearts go out to them and their families,” Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott said in a statement. “We have made clear that all of their scholarships will be guaranteed.” The H1N1 strain has been linked to an unusually high number of suicides among college football players.
