⁍ The European Commission will publish rules called the Digital Services Act (DSA) on December 2.
⁍ The proposal has triggered intense lobbying from U.S. tech giants.
⁍ Google said new rules should take into account that people and companies are asking more from tech companies.
– Google is fighting back against what it says are “unreasonable constraints” on its business model, Reuters reports. According to a Google internal document seen by the news agency, the company has launched a 60-day strategy to “remove from the Commission proposal unreasonable constraints to our business model, our ability to improve our products or roll out new features/services.” Google says it has “concerns about certain reported proposals that would prevent global technology companies from serving the growing needs of European users and businesses.” The EU plans to publish its Digital Services Act rules on Dec. 2. According to the Wall Street Journal, the Digital Services Act would force Google, Facebook, and other tech companies to hand over their user data to the EU in exchange for “free” access to EU content. Google says the rules would hurt its ability to compete in Europe. The internal document says Google wants to get the US government, embassies, and other allies to oppose the Digital Services Act and spell out the costs of new regulations.
