⁍ Several Republican senators backed a plan by China’s ByteDance to divest the U.S. operations of TikTok.

⁍ President Donald Trump said on Friday he had decided to ban the popular short-video app.

⁍ U.S. officials have said TikTok under its Chinese parent poses a national risk because of the personal data it handles.

– After President Trump banned TikTok on Friday, the Chinese company that owns the popular video-sharing app offered to sell its American operations to Microsoft, sources tell Reuters. Under the deal, Microsoft would take over TikTok’s operations in the US, while ByteDance, TikTok’s US parent, would sell its entire US business, the sources say. Trump had previously rejected a deal in which ByteDance would have kept a minority stake in TikTok. “If the company & data can be purchased & secured by a trusted US company that would be a positive & acceptable outcome,” Republican Sen. Marco Rubio tweeted Sunday. Republican Sen. John Cornyn added that a TikTok divestment “and purchase by US company is win-win,” while Republican Sen. Roger Wicker said “tight security measures need to be part of any deal in order to protect consumer data and ensure no foreign access.” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told Fox News Sunday that Trump “will take action in the coming days with respect to a broad array of national security risks that are presented by software connected to the Chinese Communist Party.”
