⁍ Senior U.S. and Chinese officials will review the implementation of their Phase 1 trade deal.

⁍ The meeting will likely air mutual grievances in an increasingly tense relationship.

⁍ China is far behind the pace needed to meet its first-year goal of a $77 billion increase.

– The US and China will hold their first high-level videoconference since President Trump threatened to end a trade deal earlier this year, the Wall Street Journal reports. The Aug. 15 meeting will include US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He, the principal negotiators for the two countries. The Aug. 15 meeting is part of a six-month review of the first phase of the trade deal signed in January, and sources tell Reuters it will likely cover issues including implementation of the deal. “It’s both the normal semi-annual review and also comes at a time when the relationship continues to deteriorate. Naturally there is much to discuss,” one source says.
