⁍ Lynas aims to begin development of a permanent waste treatment facility in Malaysia by early 2021.
⁍ Lynas can build its facility in a waste disposal site identified by the Pahang state government.
⁍ The disposal of low-level radioactive waste from Lynas’s Malaysian plant has been a contentious issue.
– Australian rare-earths miner Lynas says it will build a radioactive waste treatment plant in Malaysia after years of protests from residents worried about health risks, the BBC reports. According to Reuters, Lynas has been operating a rare-earth plant in Pahang state since 2012. Last year, the Malaysian government renewed Lynas’ license to operate, but the company had to find a place for its low-level radioactive waste. On Tuesday, Malaysia’s science, technology, and innovation minister said Lynas had been given the go-ahead to build a permanent waste treatment facility in the state. The treatment facility is expected to be up and running by early 2021.
