⁍ Twitter blamed a ‘coordinated social engineering attack’ against some of its employees who had access to ‘internal systems and tools’
The hackers who controlled the accounts posted fake tweets urging Twitter users to send money to a number of bitcoin wallets, promising that users would be paid back double.

– The FBI says it’s investigating Twitter’s massive hack, which affected accounts belonging to Bill Gates, Joe Biden, Barack Obama, Kim Kardashian West, Kanye West, Warren Buffett, Elon Musk, and many more. Twitter says it believes around 130 accounts were affected, and it’s still looking into whether non-public data was compromised, CNN reports. The hack appears to have been a bitcoin scam, though it’s not clear what the hackers’ ultimate goal was. The hackers posted fake tweets urging Twitter users to send money to bitcoin wallets, promising they’d be paid back twice. Instead, the hackers appeared to simply take the money and run—with more than $116,000 flowing into the wallets by Thursday morning. Twitter later relaxed the measure, but as of Thursday afternoon, accounts belonging to Virginia Democratic Sen. Mark Warner and Donald Trump Jr. remained unable to tweet.
