– “I have the great honor to announce that I’ve picked @KamalaHarris—a fearless fighter for the little guy, and one of the country’s finest public servants—as my running mate,” Joe Biden tweeted Tuesday. Harris, a 55-year-old California senator, is the first black woman and the first Asian-American to be on a major US presidential ticket, Reuters reports. “I’m honored to join him as our party’s nominee for Vice President,” Harris tweeted. Harris, the second black woman to serve as a US senator, was first elected to the California Senate in 2016. She is a former prosecutor and state attorney general. Biden, 77, is a former vice president who was the longest-serving Democratic vice president in history. The AP reports that he will appear with Harris at an event in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware, on Wednesday. Harris is expected to help Biden appeal to African-Americans, the Democratic Party’s most loyal constituency. “To see a Black woman nominated for the first time reaffirms my faith that in America, there is a place for every person to succeed no matter who they are or where they come from,” says Rep. Val Demings, a Black Democrat in the House. “She’s spent her career defending our Constitution and fighting for folks who need a fair shake. This is a good day for our country. Now let’s go win this thing.”
