– Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon ran national TV ads worth an estimated $1 billion during the first six months of 2020, according to a new report from TV-analytics firm iSpot.tv. That’s 205% more than in the same period a year earlier. ISpot.tv tracks TV ads that air on TV and estimates their value based on the average going rate for the inventory. It wouldn’t include discounts companies like Hulu might have received by airing ads on sister networks. Netflix, the leader in streaming video, was notably absent from iSpot.tv’s list of top advertisers by media value. Hulu’s national TV ads were worth $144.6 million during the period, up from just $35.7 million a year ago. Amazon aired $169.8 million worth of national TV ads for its Prime Video service, the most of any streaming-video platform. Amazon also ran $29.2 million worth of Fire TV ads during the first half of 2019, but iSpot.tv estimates the company didn’t put TV-ad dollars toward the devices during the period. Hulu also in 2020 took more advantage of TV-ad inventory from parent company Disney, the iSpot data showed, which means the service could have gotten more value of its advertising while spending less.
