– Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak is suing YouTube over a bitcoin scam that uses his image and likeness to trick viewers into sending the cryptocurrency. The lawsuit, which was filed in California on July 21, claims YouTube has been hosting videos featuring images and video of Wozniak for months, defrauding YouTube users of millions of dollars, Business Insider reports. The lawsuit lists 17 other plaintiffs, all victims of cryptocurrency scams on YouTube. “We take abuse of our platform seriously, and take action quickly when we detect violations of our policies, such as scams or impersonation,” a YouTube spokesperson says in a statement to Business Insider. “These fraudulent videos and YouTube’s ongoing, knowing, and active participation in their promotion, fall well outside of the immunity from liability that Section 230 provides,” the lawsuit says, referring to the 1996 Communications Decency Act that prevents social media companies from being held liable for content posted by users of their platforms. “In stark contrast to YouTube, when faced with this attack, Twitter took swift and decisive action to protect its users, shutting down the hijacked accounts until Twitter regained control,” the lawsuit reads.
