⁍ At least 1,019 fatalities due to COVID-19 were confirmed nationwide on Friday, following 1,140 on Thursday, 1,135 on Wednesday and 1,141 on Tuesday.

⁍ The numbers have been driven in large part by a surge in infections in Arizona, California, Florida, Texas and California.

⁍ The American public and its leaders have been sharply divided over whether students should return to school for the fall term during the pandemic.

– More than 1,000 people have died from the coronavirus this month, but a top White House adviser says the worst may be over for states including Texas, California, Florida, and Arizona. “We’re already starting to see some plateauing in these critically four states that have really suffered under the last four weeks, so Texas, California, Arizona, and Florida, those major metros and throughout their counties,” Dr Deborah Birx tells NBC News. She says it’s an “open question” whether children under 10 can spread the virus, per Reuters. Birx, who serves as an adviser to President Trump, says children under 18 are usually less sick than adults, but it’s an “open question” whether they can spread the disease more easily. The CDC, meanwhile, is urging schools to reopen, despite opposition from teachers unions.
