– A new report from Reuters puts the number of countries reporting coronavirus infections in the past week at 37, up from 27 last week. The news comes as the virus continues to spread, with more than 4 million cases worldwide and more than 1,000 deaths. Brazil and India, which are still weeks away from hitting their peak, have more than 1 million cases each, and the US remains at the top of the list with more than 4 million cases. In Africa, Kenya recorded a record high daily number of cases less than two weeks after the country reopened its borders, with domestic passenger flights set to resume Aug. 1. In Mexico, which has the fourth-highest death toll in the world, officials warn that a downward trend in case numbers that began in mid-June could reverse. “It is important to recognize that if we do not change the trend, there could be exponential growth,” Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum says. “It is important to recognize that if we do not change the trend, there could be exponential growth.” Reuters notes that cases have been increasing not only in countries like the US, Brazil, and India, but in Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, Bolivia, Sudan, Ethiopia, Bulgaria, Belgium, Uzbekistan, and Israel, among others. Many countries, especially those where officials eased earlier social distancing lockdowns, are experiencing a second peak more than a month after recording their first. “The pandemic has already changed the way we live our lives,” World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says.
